The BT Towers (Formerly The Post Office Towers)

Image
BT (British Telecommunications) is a telecommunications company based in Britain and it used to be owned by the public sector (which meant that the government directly oversaw its operation). But in 1984 it was privatised under Margaret Thatcher's reign with all the government's shares sold by 1993. British Telecommunications (that is an eighteen character word and the reason why the company is almost always shortened to BT) owns a lot of street infrastructure and a few famous towers leftover from its public sector days. BT has towers in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, London, Manchester, and Swansea. Cardiff’s and Swansea’s towers are just tall office blocks, Bristol’s and Manchester’s are actual telecommunication towers. But Birmingham’s and London’s to...

London's Oddly Named Buildings

Image
London has a lot of famous buildings with most of them known by normal unremarkable names. Examples of normal names include the Houses of Parliament which is home to parliament, and Tower Bridge which is a bridge with two famous towers located on its length and is next to the Tower of London. But Londoners have a good imagination and have consequently given interesting names to many of London's buildings. These are not usually their official names but are well recognised by the majority of Londoners. The Cheesegrater The Cheesegrater is located proximally to the Gherkin and the Walkie T...

Shoreditch Station And What The Overground Has Achieved

Image
The entrance to Shoreditch Shoreditch station (not to be confused with Shoreditch High Street station) was the terminus of the East London Line. The East London Line was London's twelfth tube line and operated between New Cross/New Cross Gate and Whitechapel with occasional extension to Shoreditch. But the East London Line closed on December 22 2007 with Shoreditch...

The Last Time The Thames Froze

Image
The River Thames is the second longest river in the UK and flows from Thames Head in Gloucestershire out to the North Sea in the Thames Estuary. On its journey the Thames pases Oxford, Reading, and Windsor among other towns and villages with it then flowing into and through London. The Thames is located in the south of the UK and subsequently rarely experiences subzero weather. This makes the freezing over of the Thames last year (don't get your hopes up) a rarity. The River Isis The River Thames is also called the River Isis in the section between the source at Thames Head and Dorchest...

Mudchute Park And Farm

Image
Mudchute is located on the Isle Of Dogs in the Docklands. These are just a few of the many unusual names of places in the UK which are in common day use. But it might be easier to locate if you knew that Mudchute Park and Farm is located just south of the esteemed perfection of Canary Wharf. Which is so rich it even has touchless pedestrian crossings and a station on the soon to be opened Elizabeth Line at Crossrail Place . Location Mudchute Park and Farm is located in Mudchute and is very close to Mudchute DLR station. Mudchute is located in the southern part of the Isle Of Dogs which isn't actual...

City Hall: The Building For The Mayor of London

Image
Old City Hall The Mayor of London who leads the GLA (Greater London Authority) requires a place of work; this is still true after the pandemic. The GLA was created in 2002 and since then they have been located in the purpose built City Hall building, located in the Londo...

Paddington Station

Image
London Paddington station is one of London's major termini with trains to Bristol, Cardiff, Cornwall and the west. Actually facing firmly north-west, Paddington is the gateway to the west country with services run by GWR (Great Western Railway) using its 800/802s for long distance journeys and its 387s for shorter distance journeys. Paddington station also serves the Heathrow Express for direct trains to Heathrow, and TfL Rail for slower (and cheaper) journeys to Heathrow and the stopping services to Reading. The Other Parts of Paddington ...

What Was the Marble Arch Mound

Image
The Marble Arch Mound was a temporary structure which closed on 9th January 2022 after opening on 26th July 2021. It was a viewing platform 25 metres in the sky made possible by an artificial hill covered in green sedum turf and a few trees. With everything supported by a vast amount of scaffolding. Climbing the mound initially had a fee which started at £4.50 but this was later removed due to its controversy and being named “London's Worst Tourist Attraction”. Controversy and Costs ...

The Millennium Dome (The O2)

Image
Opened on the 31st December 1999, for the Millennium the following day, the Millennium Dome was going to be a temporary exhibition for the year 2000. But it is still here, renamed The O2, and houses a shopping destination and an arena with a 20,000 person capacity. The Millennium As the dome was created for the Millennium it has some date/time based properties. This includes: the diameter of the dome being 365 metres for the length of a year, there being 12 yellow tall structural towers for the months in a year (with them also in a clock like circle), and also the maximum height of the main dom...

The 5 IKEA'S in London

Image
IKEA is a well known cheap Swedish furniture shop and is famous for its meatballs. IKEA has 5 (proper large) stores in and slightly around London, and I have been to all of them. They are all located (except Lakeside) in the middle of Outer London, mostly in industrial or shopping estates. In fact almost 1 in 4 of IKEA'S 21 UK stores are in London. The locations are listed in order from the closest to Trafalgar Square to the furthest. Greenwich ...

Nanjizal Beach: The Caribbean Cove in Cornwall

Image
Also known as Mill Bay, Nanjizal is located on the south coast of Cornwall between Porthcurno and Land's End (the westernmost point in mainland England). Nanjizal has no road access with only a narrow private track coming close to the beach, this makes it an elusive location to access with the nearest car park over a mile away. What is at Nanjizal Nanjizal not only has a beautifully sandy beach but also a gorgeous waterfall and some striking caves. With them being best viewed from the cove but also have...

Cavalry Tunnel: The Secret Almost Abandoned Tunnel under a London Railway Line

Image
Nowhere to be found on Google Maps, running parallel to the River Crane, the Cavalry Tunnel lies dark and abandoned under the train line between Whitton and Feltham. And despite the unclear access rights the tunnel is relatively heavily used by the general public with no physical obstructions which stop access. The tunnel is split into two parts; the most used paved section connecting either side of the train line, and the abandoned pitch black fly tipper's heaven with a tantalising door at the end. The Used Section Despite being almost abandoned the used section has unnaturally high footfall primarily because the nearest crossing of the railway line is 0.6 miles away (by the c...
